My husband and I have recently bought our first home together. For a long time we had longed for a house that belonged to both of us. But the road to getting our new home was far from smooth. For years we hit barriers and delays. As frustrating as that was, with hindsight we can now see that those other opportunities just wouldn’t have been right for us in the seasons we were in.
God’s timing is always perfect and, very frustratingly, that sometimes means we have to wait. It means holding fast and being patient. Something I really, REALLY, struggle with!
As a result I am constantly being challenged by God on it.
When I have decided I want or need something I want it instantly; be it an item, action, job, relationship or life event. I panic if it doesn’t happen right now it might never happen, it might slip from my fingertips never to be seen again. It’s in these times I need to turn to Romans 12:12:
“Let your hope keep you joyful, be patient in your troubles, and pray at all times.”
For me patience is not a natural strength, instead my body reverts to panic and anxiety. This is far from the way God wants me to be. Hope, as it tells us above, is the joyful sister of patience, and hope is achieved through prayer. God never abandons us in our troubles we must turn to him and be reassured that everything is in his hands. With that knowledge I am able to let go of my anxiety and fear, and instead, rest in the joy of the hope of things to come.
“Humble yourselves, then, under God’s mighty hand, so that he will lift you up in his own good time. Leave all your worries with him, because he cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:6-7
But God does not always make us wait, his perfect timing means that when we really need him right then and there, he always shows up. Moses had to wait patiently wandering the desert for 40 years before he reached his promised land. But when the Egyptian army was approaching fast behind him and the sea lay in front (cutting off any hope of escape) God did not make him wait. He literally said ‘why are you standing around crying out for help? Move forward!’, and instantly God made a way for him to go through.
God’s timing is always perfect so you don’t need to worry!
Trust him and be rewarded with joyful hope and a peaceful heart. Call out to him in prayer, share your frustrations, but know that he is God and he’s got this.
“… God keeps his promise, and he will not allow you to be tested beyond your power to remain firm; at the time you are put to the test, he will give you the strength to endure it, and so provide you with a way out.” 1 Corinthians 10:13
