After seven years of creating Hope City Church in the capital of Ghana, Andy and Karen Gorman have returned to Sheffield as champions and Ali and Karen Bianchi have taken the challenge to take the helm. This is their story.
We’ve lived and ministered in Sheffield for the last 15 years, but apart from travelling with 4 kids, 22 cases, 8 backpacks, four car seats, a double buggy and navigating our shipping container with all our personal belongings through customs as well as learning to drive on Accra’s notoriously wild roads (and coming down with malaria within two weeks of our arrival), it’s been a smooth transition.
Our kids, are thriving in a new and fascinating environment, bartering with street sellers, riding horses, eating copious amounts of jollof (African rice is the best) and spending 99% of their lives outdoors. Karen has big plans for the development of City Hearts in Accra, to help more kids than ever stay in education and raise their aspirations for their futures.
I’m enjoying the fact that there’s a cinema just five minutes walk from us! The church family have welcomed us with open arms, becoming fast friends and helping us to negotiate our way around a new culture.
The church is thriving! In seven years, Andy and Karen have built a community that is full of life, love for each other and God, and on the verge of amazing things. Church is growing and there is a sound of victory in the worship like we’ve never experienced before. We count it such a privilege to help navigate this amazing group of believers into this next season, and are so grateful to God for giving us the opportunity of a lifetime!
