You don’t need to pray about setting aside a year of your life to knowing more about the word of God, taking your leadership to higher levels and being transformed into the person you’ve always wanted to be. You need to pray about not doing it.
When I felt prompted by God to do Academy, I had just finished my second year of university and was already serving in church during most of my spare time, and so in some ways I felt like I had already done Academy (rinsed serving for most of what it was worth), but how wrong could I have been?! I think that even though I knew Academy would shape me and change me, I had pretty vague expectations on the year and what it would bring.
I think that even though I knew Academy would shape me and change me…
Now, in all honesty, Academy is not known as being an easy year! Personally, I’ve been challenged in ways I didn’t expect and in ways bigger than what I expected, whether that has been with personal faith, capacity, humility, giving up social time, expectations for what God’s got to do and so much more. The amount of work I have put into this past year is unparalleled to what I have done previously, but the change of character, the blessings and the passion for God’s kingdom is more abundant than it ever has been.
With regard to the best parts, I guess most people say going on a 10 day mission is their biggest highlight, which is a given! Conferences were incredible and seeing all the hard work and prayers coming alive was the most glorious, yet humbling thing; but for me the family we built up as a year was beyond a doubt the most special part of Academy. There is something so extraordinary about being with a community of believers who have set a year apart to help build His kingdom.
Looking back at the past year, the change in myself has been huge! I’ve been able to run Freshers week, be part of the brains behind a National Conference, pastor a group of incredible students, serve my church in multiple areas and so much more. We’ve seen people within my year discover their gifting, have family, health and financial breakthroughs and refine themselves in so many areas of their lives in order to release them into the incredibly exciting future that God has in store for them! This truly has been the best year of my life so far.
